I don't think the second position is a good example of "when the race gets better run". What you've done is unstripped Blue's 8 pt. which is one of the main deciding factors in these types of decisions and you've also given White the 5 pt. anchor instead of the bar which, I believe, is a better point to have at this stage in the game. If a hitting contest ensues (as it does with the provoking play of 24/18 13/8) White will always have an anchor.
