You have illustrated why reference positions need to be crystal clear in our memories. I've been burned several times by making a play that seemed similar to plays I had seen previously, only to find out I blundered. The position at hand and the ref position had a few (seemingly minor) differences which swung the decision the other way. Such seems to be the case here, too.
