Never played Go?

Go is definitely much more complex than chess. I once read an article that playing at high grandmaster level in chess means you'll usually have only 5 "tough" decisions during an average game of 41 moves.
Nowadays opening theory in chess has developed so much that at high level a lot of the novelties occur between move 20 and 30! Even in regional divisions (I play in the 5th division with a rating of around 2000) we are out of theory at around move 12-15 on average, and one division above you can't even survive without a good opening preparation.
What I don't understand is that backgammon is below scrabble and poker.
