Really? My scenario is one that, while unlikely, could happen. Your donkey/grandmaster argument is not only unlikely, it is unrealistic.

I guess you're not accustomed to reasoning at this level of abstraction. The point is that in either case, if risking the first match causes you to play better in the later matches, then you might want to take that risk intentionally.

I am not sure what you think should be distinguished.

As Bob said, unequal strength is irrelevant; what matters is that something can happen in the first match that can affect the performance in the other match.

If XG plays Jellyfish, but doesn't change its behavior from one match to the next, then the unequal strength doesn't have any impact on independence.
