The Nactation used in the book is not the "short-form" Nactation you are used to seeing in this forum; rather, it's "long-form" nactation, which is almost like English. For example, the caption to position A102 is "54-split, 63-run, 31". You can probably understand this already, but if you can't it doesn't matter. Just look at the diagram and ask yourself "How should I play a 3-1 roll?" (Every problem in the book is a 3-1 roll.)
Btw, how would you play 3-1 in this position, which diagrammed here:
