EPC - Point of last take calculation

I have a question related to how to calculate point of last take when using EPC.
Walter Trice wrote: Start with the "number of rolls" for the position of the player on shake, and subtract 3.
But what exactly does he mean with that? For an N-roll position:
- Number of rolls = N
or
- Number of rolls = EPC * 6/49
For istance, take a look at the following position:
White is Player 2
score: 0
pip: 22Unlimited Game
Jacoby Beaverpip: 15
score: 0
Blue is Player 1XGID=-EE------------------accc-:0:0:1:00:0:0:3:0:10 Blue on roll, cube action?
eXtreme Gammon Version: 2.01
Blue's EPC is 36. Number of rolls and point of last take for White would be, respectively:
- Number of rolls = 5.0; White's point of last take = 38.0
- Number of rolls = 4.4; White's point of last take = 37.4
Please note that I built a position where White's EPC is 37.7, so it actually makes a difference which formula you use.
