Black trails by 18 points in the race after his move. That translates, according to the Kleinman Count into 17% racing chances alone. He has two men vs. one man behind. Both players have a two point board, including the five point. White has also made the barpoint, forming a four point block against the acepoint. His midpoint is stripped, Black has there one spare. White has 13 men in the zone, black 10.

Splitting against the massive fire power will be kamikaze without a cause. If White can extricate his straggler, converting the game in a simple acepoint game, it will be a pass. Even with a better anchor, it will be hard to play on.

So Black has to create instantly counterplay against the white orphan. White's midpoint is stripped, if he can’t escape soon, he has to break with numbers, which will play awkwardly in the blocking zone. So it isn’t not so very bad, to play a man from the midpoint into the outfield, adding a man to the zone and the primefield. This fits only for the three, not for the two. Looking at the safe play vs. bold play criteria the tactical principles are almost even, but the strategic principles tips it to the bold play. We have to contain White’s straggler. We have little time. We can’t wait for a natural play. Slotting the four point is the strongest place for the two. If we are not hit, we have now enough counterplay to take a cube and even a hit isn’t automatically the end of the world.
