I'm not sure I understand your question, but in this sort of position, the probability that the cube gets up to 2ⁿ is much higher than in a typical position. Exponentially high cube values drive up the variance, and if you roll it out longer to try to tame the variance, then that will usually be long enough for a 2ⁿ⁺¹ cube to show up and drive the variance up again.
