ABPA Backgammon for Intellivision

In 1979, ABPA Backgammon was a release day title for the Intellivision platform. ABPA in context was the American Backgammon Players Association. However, I've never really been able to find references for the organization outside of this game title. Does anyone know anything about the American Backgammon Players Association and what has become of it? I'm sure this must sound like a complete newbie question, so I apologize to anyone who is inconvenienced by me asking this.

In gamer circles, ABPA Backgammon is still a pretty common topic considering that it was a seminal board game release and actually enjoyable to play.
