Another issue with chess, as a few of us have mentioned before, is that scoring provides so much leeway for ties. I think one of the complaints in any game, backgammon included, is that you'd eventually get sponsorship problems if you have too many ties. People like to see real winners, so sponsors will put their money on tournaments that have winners associated with them. Ties are seen as too wishy-washy, if I understand it correctly, so sponsors shy away from them.
