Leaving a gap on the 3pt is far safer on the next roll than leaving three checkers on the rear point. With a gap on the 3pt, rolls of 33, 44, 55, 66, 61, 51, 41 and 31 would force us to open up a blot next time. With three checkers on the rear point, 66, 65, 64, 63, 62, 55, 54, 53, 52, 44, 43, 42, 33 and 32 would all force a blot.

If we expose a blot after that, we will have that many more checkers off.
