2013 Texas Backgammon Championships -- San Antonio

Date: Wednesday, 2 January 2013, at 9:14 p.m.

Only four short weeks until the tournament -- all is coming together well.

I want to remind everyone that hotel reservations need to be made by January 10. After that date the hotel will no longer hold/block rooms allotted for the tournament -- so, in effect, you take your chances that rooms will still be available in the Menger. The Menger does own an adjoining hotel, the Crockett, (located across the street), which is similar in many regards and can accommodate any Menger overflow. So, late registrants can be assured a room; but, if you want to be sure to be in the Menger, make those reservations early.

We've been most encouraged by, and are most appreciative of, the response of the backgammon community to this new, exciting event. We want it to be the largest tournament in the US in 2013 -- and, despite being early in the year, the first step in achieving that distinction is to be larger than any tournament in 2012. We think that is within our reach. We have the city, the hotel, the events, the staff, and the associations to make it happen.

Quite a large number of Giants and Legends of the game are planning to attend. A number of international players will be in attendance. In addition to the normal ABT and Masters/Limited Jackpot events, the Dual-Duel, the USBGF Tournament of Stars, and the USBGF National Championship Qualifier provide an array of events for everyone. A player can play as much or as little backgammon as they wish.

Come and enjoy the tournament and the city. Many players are bringing spouses, friends, and/or partners and staying extra days to have a mini winter vacation in the mild climate and wonderful tourist city. The tournament hotel rate applies five days before and after the tournament. We envisioned this tournament as a 'destination event' combining backgammon with the culture, history, attractions, and restaurants of a great city. It is fulfilling to see many taking advantage of it all. Join us !!

Please contact me with any questions or if I can provide any additional information.

Thanks and best wishes to all, Bill
