Back in January, Miran referred to this handy formula. I didn't read the article closely at the time, but the topic came up again recently on rec.games.backgammon so I revisited it. I just wanted to point out that there's an equivalent formula that I slightly prefer. In the language of the above article, if I have X numbers that kill bird 1, Y numbers that kill bird 2, and Z numbers that kill both birds, then the number of rolls that kill both birds is 2XY – Z2.
