If you develop a feel for what a "normal" position looks like, crossovers work pretty well. Half crossovers are a bit more accurate and make sense if things don't look "normal."

That said, my experience is that if you find a pip counting method you are comfortable with (for me it's Cluster Counting) and work at it a bit, it's as fast (or faster) than messing around with crossovers, plus you get an exact count.
