9/8, 7/6(3) is easy to miss. Not a lot of equity at stake, and you are likely playing quickly at this point, just making the first move you see.

I used to make this mistake all the time, and unfortunately still haven't erased it from my game.

In addition to what others have said (No immediate shots, creates spare fives) I think the key point to grasp here is that the bar point is a liability. If you can clear it and keep the spares high, this is usually a slam dunk.
