Besides the appeal of developing the six point, $ (b-23, 6-5) splits the back checkers which is an advantage over D (b-24, 13-11). Since a blot already exists on the nine point, putting another on the eleven with D is less appealing than it is on the opening move. D doesn't look right. The one downside of $ is that it does not leave good sixes when the bar point is made. Creating good sixes is important enough that I would consider playing U (Up b-22). If the bar was made, U would probably be best. Since it is only slotted, I would reject U and play $.
