dice transparency

I personally find that I seem to misread opaques about as often as the clear dice.
If that's the case (for most) then the impetus for opaque dice loses its appeal. Hard to quantify something like this (either way), for sure.
There are some very sophisticated dice out there that can actually be adjusted during play, by shifting the position of the weighting, with mercury for example. Are these transparent?!
I don't doubt what you say, but wonder why someone would go to the trouble when they can just switch out/in crooked dice with slight-of-hand. Given the density of mercury (trivia -- lead bricks float in a mercury tub), the effort of removing enough plastic so that the overall weight of a die is the same as standard would be a significant task, and likely an easy way to detect one of these -- just weigh it.
I've long wondered about building a device which would detect out-of-balance dice. The conclusion I came up with was that it isn't worth it. Maybe casinos could (or already do) use something like this. That would be about the only way to get one's investment back.
