My hunch is that robertie says make the GP and slot the 5 as this was once the fashion. My take is that slotting the 5 leaves way too many shots (any 1,4,6 or 9). with blue ~20 pips up in the race I don't see the need to play recklessly. I'll just slide over to the 9 after making the GP.

With the race lead, a safe play that minimizes shots is a good idea, but I'm not going to play 10/6. Yuck.
