Calculations over the board

Matt Cohn-Geier says (Feb 13): "One could argue that calculating take points or gammon values is important, but I only do it over the board rarely."

This has cheered me up enormously. If a superstar like Matt does not do complex calculations over the board, then perhaps I should not despair of improving my game. I understand take points and gammon values and can work them out with pen, paper and calculator but it's too much over the board.
