As I entered Paul’s position into my database, I noticed that I would have played the third roll differently.Having made the bar point on first roll, it is often correct to play reverse split when you roll a 6 on the third roll. That is the case here.
Running out to the 16pt may have been a reflexive action, because that is the right play on the second roll, after an opening 61P.

White is on roll. Position ID: 4NvgESDg2+ABMA Match ID: MIEGAAAAAAAE 61P-61P-62R-51 – White Is on Roll
Less obvious, perhaps, is the way White should have handled his 51 on the fourth roll.Splitting your rear checkers on the second roll will often be best in response to an opening 61. That turns out to be right here as well.
