The thought has never crossed my mind to try to use reference positions for borderline too good positions. Such a rarity of knowing a tg ref. pos. and it coming up (or something similar) I think it's a waste of effort. I've also always felt pretty comfortable making tg/ntg decisions OtB though leaning definitely towards playing on in what I feel might be close decisions.
