Your reasoning to question the validity of the SD is correct. However, it applies to the average PR as well. My main argument regarding the SD is that it should be part of the PR discussion.

As for segregating the results - it can be done. However, I am still waiting for a definition for long and short matches.

My opinion is that three segments are appropriate: short matches (5 points), medium range matches (7-9 points), and long matches (11+ points). The problem with such segmentation is the current sample size.
