In position 1, missing out on 55 looks like it is worth about .03. Your equity after playing 2/1* is worse than 3/2 even under the assumption that you get missed.

I would think that in both cases, the chances of getting a second checker sent back must be higher if we pay now

Intuitively that seems unlikely to me, but if you're interested in mathematics and puzzles and otherwise bored, it should be possible to solve or at least estimate the chance of getting hit in the near future.
