When my bg eyes (some people are blessed with Bette Davis eyes, not me unfortunately) see these types of positions when the opponent's position is more compact I feel I really have the need to put a wedge in their position. That means as you said, if they have a 8/6/5 or 8/6/4 set up, a very compact position, I want to wedge myself in there by making the defensive bar point. If their position has a lot of space in it like when they have lower points made the need for the wedge isn't there.
