If you let the sharks run the club you will lose all the fish. Keep the entry fees low and offer multiple side pools. Also, people who want to bet more can bet against each other on who goes farther and make their own side pool.

Sharks forget that if they get too greedy they will lose the fish, and if you make it easier for weaker players to come and enjoy the game, the pot will be bigger in the long run, and some of these weaker players will eventually get better and compete at higher levels and come more often. If they keep having to pay larger fees and rarely win you will lose them.

I would love to see the day when tournaments are not about money at all...like Bridge, except for the Championship division (or "Pro" division). Just have a small fee to cover expenses for the venue and some trophies and a little income for the guy who does all the work running the tournament. Take a good look at Contract Bridge where thousands of people play several times a week at their local clubs and pay a small fee and don't win a damn thing but rating points. They play for the pleasure of playing and trying to get a higher ranking locally and nationally.

Also, when you remove the money you make the game a better venue for school kids and their families to play....like chess and bridge...and that will help the game grow.
