Nactation Key Family Nactation Traditional Notation Note Zero 0 13/10 0 (Zero) is for plays that bear off one or more checkers, and barring that, for plays that move to the 10pt or 20pt. Four 4 6/4, 5/4 4 (Four) is for plays that move one or more checkers to the 4pt, 14pt, or 24pt. Preference is given to lower point numbers. Eight 8 11/8 8 (Eight) is for plays that move one or more checkers to the 8pt or 18pt. Preference is given to lower point numbers. Down D 11/8 In the D (Down) family, all checker movements must land in the outer board. By the 6pt Convention, owning the 8pt ranks ahead of owning the 11pt. Down d 13/10 In the D (Down) family, retaining the 11pt ranks below making the 8pt. Point P 11/8 In the P (Point) family, owning the 5pt and 8pt ranks ahead of owning the 4pt and 11pt. Point p 6/4, 5/4 Thanks to Nack for alerting me that I had mixed up the Nactations in the P (Point) family.
Under the 6pt Convention, a made 4pt and a made 8pt are both two pips aways from the 6pt. Neither is “closer to the 6pt” than the other. The 6pt Convention resolves such a tie in favor of the inner board point. So if that were the only issue, then making the 4pt here would outrank making the 8pt.
The problem with that logic is that the 5pt must be broken in order to make the 4pt. Choice #1 in this position it to own both the 5pt and 8pt. Choice #2 is to own both the 4pt and 11pt. Hence, P (Point) = 11/8 gets the capital letter, and p (point) = 6/5, 6/4, the lower case.
