If we can take off an odd number of checkers, we get to an even number remaining. Playing 5/1 means 11 takes off 3, and 55 still takes off 3. Also, a missing 2 can be played 6/4, which could be useful since 2s are likely to be an issue. You can still take off 2 checkers with 22 if you leave a checker on the 6 point, and you don't waste a pip with a six.

All of these don't add up to enough to make the play better, but that's why they are so close.
