Beginners Question - How to play different before the cube is turned? (Unlimited Games)

I have been wondering if there is a qualitatively succinct explanation for how one should play before the cube is turned when Jacoby is in effect. Understanding that the answer may differ depending at what stage of the game is in, are there any rules of thumb that one should keep in mind with pre cube checker play?
