I want to thank Mike for his hard work on transcription. Before I saw the transcription I watched the video and became quite depressed, thinking that both Mochy and I played poorly after listening to Falafel's comments about many of the plays and cube decisions
Falafel is brilliant and his commentary is fun, and I have great respect for him and his game, but he does get emotional, and that's one of the things I like about him...he has great passion about the game. So please don't think I resent his comments in any way....if you are going to put yourself in front of the crowd you have to be willing to accept the heat and leave yourself open to be criticized.
The fact is I did make one terrible blunder...a horrible take, but it was a confusing position and immediately after the game I asked Mochy if it was a take and he said he thought it might be. I am sure if he had gotten the cube he would have thought a lot longer about it and passed. Michy told me later that while he was watching he wasn't that sure about the take/drop decision either. So a major cube blunder is not that uncommon and I'm not terribly embarrassed. Without that error I would have played 3.5 and won 10 points from Mochy and I did win more games. Even with that error I played 4.19 (World Class) which for anyone under time pressure with a clock in that situation isn't bad.
The real star of course was Mochy. I don't think there are many in the world that could have played those same 20 games with a clock and with the world watching and played 1.73! (Certainly Falafel is someone who could do it too, and that's why I thought Mochy and I both played worse hearing the commentary.)
In my opinion, Mochy continues to earn the No. 1 Giant designation not just because of his skill, but because of the way he promotes the game in Japan and worldwide, and because he is always such a gentleman and good sport, win or lose. He sets a great example for the rest of us and shows us what a true Giant should be.
I hope everyone enjoyed watching and listening as much as I enjoyed playing. I think we've done this prop enough and I am working on something new and exciting for the next one, and I think one thing that will make it even more exciting is if I get set up a competition between players better than me.
I want to thank everyone who donated to Mochy's Under 25 charity and encourage everyone who has not done that yet to go to paypal and do so. Mochy and I did this largely to help him fund his wonderful program to bring more kids into the game.
Lastly, a special thanks to Tom Buckner for his financial support of the event, to Geoffrey Parker for providing a beautiful, special board, and to Howard Markowitz for hosting the event at his tournament. Much thanks to Carter and Steve Sax for helping with the commentary and for supporting the event.
