Perhaps I should have said more. 5 point looks nice, but look what happens several rolls after. Opponent escapes his checker and consolidates on his advantage. In this variation we are hoping for a doublet that lets us advance our retarded anchor, or somehow escape back checkers. Notice that because we are ahead in the race, sitting and waiting for a shot from the ace point game is normally not an option, because we usually won't have a strong board when we hit it. 5pt is a slow death variation.
If we hit and play 8/7, good things may happen. Opponent may dance allowing us to make another home-board point and to start moving out our checker from his home-board. If he hits us, we may come in and hit back or upgrade our anchor. Our opponent's home-board has a big hole. We should hit, so she doesn't make her 5pt. Hitting gains with two extra blots laying around. Hit doesn't guarantee that opponent won't be able to do anything useful with these blots, but limits useful rolls -- compare 51 and 62 after both plays.
