No clue how to play this 3-1

At DMP yesterday in the Barpoint Club doubles tournament we obviously only had two choices and we made the wrong choice. It was a .040 error, far from our worst error of the day, but what bothers me is that I was not comfortable that I even knew how to tackle the problem correctly.

I would be interested in hearing the thought process to compare the two plays.

(Not that it matters, but we did win the game and match anyway.)
