Chouette - A few history notes

I have found reference to "faire la chouette" and "a la chouette" in both the 18h and 19th centuries relating to variations on two handed games allowing a team of two or more players to play against a single player. These include French billiards, ecarte, piquet and bezique. In the early 20th century it would appear that there was also chouette version of Gin Rummy.
Some sources state that before the term "chouette" was used "jouette" was used.
"A la chouette" as an expression appears to mean nice or cool.
