In the summer of 1980, a year after I started playing, my brother and I were in Tucson. Munch heard there was a bar where they played backgammon, so we dropped by. A couple of guys were playing, but there was something ineffably strange about their game. Finally Munchkin picked up on it.

"They are playing backwards!"

The player sitting White was moving the Black checkers towards the opposite home board, and vice versa.
