In the original position, with two checkers in the third quadrant, there is much less wastage on large doublets that in the other ones.

Zare's formula is checkers factor + pips factor - 4. This is certainly a decent approximation on average, but consider your first three variants, with their presumably exact EPCs from a bot database and the position of their stragglers

For them, the last factor is respectively 4.6, 3.9 and 3.2. Would it be shocking if it would be 5 or 6 with one or more men in the third quadrant ? ~
