DQ: bold vs safe early game

I prefaced the subject with "DQ" to indicate this is a donkey question post. XG++ says I played this position wrong big time.

I wonder whether the analysis is one of bold vs safe, which I find inconclusive, or something more simple.

Please explain the reasoning behind the correct play. Thanks.
