In Response To: Great Commentary/ World Championship/ No Spoiler Alerts (Casper Van der Tak)

I was sitting right behind Phil, Falafel had to go play his match leaving Phil alone. Phil turned around and asked me If I wanted to jump in. I know phil very well and could have done some dialogue with him that would have been entertaining but not served the BG community in a way that I thought waould be in everyone's interest. I have done commentary in the pool world and am very capable there with over 30 years experience. However I learned there that commentary in not my strong suit.

A couple minutes Larry came back and as I recall I told him that Phil asked me to jump in and I declined. Larry said he was good at this sort of thing and the rest is history. He did a much better job than I did, and It was a very nice time. With Phil, Larry, Falafel and MCG who just drifted by and then took over XG I thought it was one of the best commentary's in a long time. Each one of the 4 was different and it made for a good entertaining time.

Was the analysis as good as it could have been? No. However we all have the match and can do the deep analysis on our own time. Was it entertaining? Yes, and whats wrong with that? IMO entertainment is better for BG than in-depth hardcore on the fly analysis that most people wont enjoy or understand.

Having said that the commentary at the Nordic is a deeper analysis and enjoyable for me and more serious BG players(or players who are putting in lots of effort to improve). Which is good as well.

In summery I think it was great for as it was fun, and what they do at the Nordic is also great for a different audience. Which is a win-win for BG. Two separate major events with two different styles. That IMO is the best possible thing for BG. If every tournament had the same commentary, same everything the potential audience would be limited. Too technical or too social isn't the solution. Both is as it appeals to a wider range of players.

We all play for different reasons and variety is the spice of life.

And who knows maybe someday I will give it a go at commentary, when I feel I can be a asset to the BG community. I'm just not ready yet.

MC was MUCH better in almost every way this year than 2 years ago, in fact the tourney was in every way. The food in the hotel really slipped.

See everyone next year

hope you like this post.

best Eric

PS: i didn't edit it, hope its good. :-)
