Backgammon clock rules - introduce standard, rapid and blitz?

Today, almost all backgammon tournaments are played with clock settings 2 min / 12 s. Comparing to chess (which I know very little about), my impression is that the common backgammon settings are approximately equivalent to rapid chess, in terms of how fast you need to play with these limits compared to how fast one tends to play in general.

However, in BG, we very rarely play with other clock settings.

(Granted, there is still, unfortunately, the occasional event where clocks are optional, and most tournaments have a relatively small speedgammon side event.)

I think it would be a good idea to have some backgammon tournaments where the main event was played with blitz settings (somewhere around the settings of today's speedgammon settings, perhaps), and others where you would play with a healthier time bank than today's normal one, perhaps 4 min / 12 s.
