The California Backgammon Championship just concluded and I couldn’t be happier. (Or more exhausted!) Steve Sax repeated his win for the Open title! Maybe next year a 3-peat?! Teddy Lance was so thrilled with his Advanced win, he’s taking home the draw sheet to hang in the house! Larry Shiller, Ben Friesen & Jack Edelson did their fabulous streaming. Phil Simborg was here with his posse: Akiko, Mochy, Victor & Alia, MCG. Phil cashed in the doubles so now he can pay for everyone’s dinner. I was honored that old friend Paul Magriel came and pleased he cashed. Everyone was so complimentary, it makes all the hard work worthwhile. In particular, people loved the new Oscar-like trophies. Most impressive probably was the red carpet backdrop with sponsor logos. That backdrop will be in every trophy photo, hopefully making our sponsors happy. But the comment I heard most often was how smoothly the entire tournament functioned. And for that, the credit has to go to my co-director Ergin Bayrak. He is thoroughly knowledgeable in running tournaments from his twice-weekly work with Patrick Gibson, and his laid-back temperament and professionalism is a huge plus in such an intense environment. Now I plan on sleeping a full night for the first time in about ten months. Our next is June 22-24, 2018, so DON’T PROCRASTINATE when it’s time to register!
