Congratulations to Roberto Litzenberger, winner of the Cherry Blossom Championship – his first ABT win defeating a strong field of 58 players that included more than two dozen Giants of Backgammon, grandmasters, former ABT champions, and American Hall of Fame Inductees. Chris Trencher was finalist with Steve Brown winning the Consolation. Michy Kageyama #2 Giant of Backgammon won the Cherry Blossom Jackpot, defeating perennial masters winner Ed O’Laughlin. Steve Brown won the George Washington Masters Jackpot, Gary Fries the Abraham Lincoln Open Jackpot, and Tom Rebelo from Canada the Thomas Jefferson Limited Jackpot. In the Advanced division, newcomer Cary Hoarty was the winner --- a young college student just beginning to make his mark in the backgammon world. Ray Fogerlund won the USBGF National Championship East winning a fabulous FTH board and carrying case donated by sponsor Gammon Stuff. USBGF Tournament of Stars teams Joe Russell/Chris Trencher and Art Benjamin/Christian Briggs split the honors. The Chernomoretz team including Leyla Zaloutskaya, Boris Dekhtyar, and Felix Goykhman won the Hall of States/Embassy Row event. Frank Talbot won the BMAB-USA event. Marcy Kossar winner of the Senior Senators prevailed over Patrick Domico winner of the Young Politicos event.

Results of the Championship and Advanced divisions and Jackpots are posted on Matt Reklaitis' bgbrackets.com. Complete results will be available on chicagpoint.com and usbgf.org shortly.

Julius High did an amazing job running the Novice and Advanced Novice division which had 32 entrants – providing lessons/tips along the way. Hall of Famer and world champion Bill Robertie gave an excellent lecture at a special dinner for Novices. Sheri Peters won the Advanced Novice division and a traveling Art Gammon board donated by Gammon Guys; Chris Siddall won the Novice division.

Marty Storer and Steve Sax presented 10 instructive positions from Paul Magriel matches over a 40-year period. An article with their analysis of Magriel’s amazing mastery of backgammon in the pre-bot era will be in the Summer issue of the PrimeTime Backgammon USBGF magazine.

Many thanks to everyone who helped make the 2018 Cherry Blossom Backgammon Championship a success – the 141 attendees, all-star directing staff led by Barry Silliman assisted by Kent Goulding, Ben Friesen, Julius High, Robin Horton, Jeb Horton, Paul Horton, streaming staff Andy Lindeberg, and Stephen Collins. Thanks to Pat Knapp and Ben Friesen for posting results on bgbrackets.com. Voice of Backgammon Larry Shiller provided commentary. Sponsors included FTH board donor Gammon Stuff, U.S. Backgammon Federation with $500 added money, Gammon Guys, and Alan Pruce who provided added money to the Bluff Gammon event, Alfred Mamlet who sponsored the Newcomers event, Jason Lee who supported the Novice dinner, and DC area players John Klein, Bill Finneran, and Karen Davis.
