Alternative formulation of the recurrence

I knew when I posed this problem how to calculate the answers for small tourneys but I did not know how to calculate the limit and I did not know the combinatorics approach. Thank you, Bob and Maik, for your teaching.

One could pose more complex problems, for example with more than two in the side pool or with random byes, but I guess the solutions would be more complicated without being of more interest.
