Hoyle first published his backgammon treatise in 1743 (not 1745). Gammons were recognized. His "safe" plays were when playing for a "hit", his term for a single game. The bolder plays were aiming for gammons.

I believe the earliest version available in Google Books is a 1748 edition of Hoyle's Games. Backgammon is the final section. https://books.google.com/books?id=QuJYAAAAYAAJ
