Interesting backgammon reference in children's book

I just finished reading a children's book called The Unexpected Life of Oliver Cromwell Pitts. Set in 18th century England, it has a Dickensian flavor, with the protagonist suffering all kinds of injustices at the hands of cruel adults. It's an entertaining read, written by an award-winning author.

But the reason I'm mentioning it here is that several times throughout the book, it is mentioned how the protagonist's father is skilled at backgammon and wins considerable sums of money as a result. I wonder if any children/teens will become curious about backgammon as a consequence of reading this book.
