Clocks

As all of you know I'm very much in favor of clocks in all Championship division matches. The Intermediates/Advanceds can argue about clocks all they wish -- I don't care -- but they ultimately need to learn to play against a clock.

Anyway, it is interesting to note that on Play65, as an example, they use, on the 'fast' setting, a 15 second buffer and 90 seconds per GAME -- with no acccumulation of unused time. This, of course, differs from the ABT standard of a 12 second buffer and 120 seconds per POINT and the European standard of a 15 second buffer and 150 seconds per POINT -- and the obvious accumulation of time.

The Play65 method certainly makes for much faster overall play -- which is perhaps justified on-line where clicking a mouse and not handling dice speeds things up over those actions on a live board. However, time management over the course of the match becomes less important.

I think I prefer, certainly for live board matches, the existing ABT and Euro standard methodology; but it is interesting to think about the Play65 methodology as it may relate to live board match play.
