White to the right?

While chouetting this weekend, one player said that an early backgammon rule was that the board should be setup so the player using white or lighter colored checkers would bearoff in the lower right portion of the board, playing counter-clockwise. A check of the 2 backgammon books I had agreed with this convention in their diagrams, but admittedly its a small sample size.

Anybody else ever heard of this?
