Preparing for the coming age of clocked BG

It's always been important to have a good feeling for the pipcount, so this question isn't unique to clocked matches. However, the latter certainly emphasize the importance of NOT wasting time counting pips while the clock is running.

What method(s) have you used to find/know/estimate the pipcount when time is critical?
