Goal: purchase a pre-assembled powerful rollout machine for under $3k.

Requirements: capable of running both SW and GNU-bg.

Solution: HP (business) xw4600 customizable system -- $2295 + ~$65 shipping.

Components and specifications:

Vista 64 OS downgradable to Win/XP (installed).

Intel Core 2 QUAD Q9650 running at 3.0 GHz w/12MB cache on 1333 frontside bus.

NVIDEA Quadro FX570 graphics card w/256 MB Ram, PCIe interface.

3 GB DDR2 800 ECC ram.

250 GB, SATA harddrive w/3 Gb/s transfer rate.

16X DVD+-RW SATA optical drive.

Broadcom 5751 Netxtreme Gigabit PCIe network card.

HP L1950g 19 inch flat panel digital monitor.

3 year parts&labor onsite (standard warranty), workstation only.
