Is 3-ply GNU-bg's best backgame player?

Neil Robbins's position a couple threads below made me think of something I've noticed before -- that GNU-bg 3-ply seems to EVALUATE backgame positions more accurately than either 2-ply or 4-ply. Anyone ever reach this hypothesis besides me?
