You may have found the holy grail. I've never heard/seen this quote before. I've never heard this person mentioned as a BG player. I dug through the internet a bit and although this person is chronicled, it doesn't mention backgammon.
But what it does say is that he lived in Florida in the late 20's. He was in the right place at the right time. He married an heiress in the mid-20's (so he had the $ to play BG with). He ran in the right circles.
Note Longacre says "reputed father" so he wasn't 100% sure, apparently. However, it was 1931 when he wrote these words. That's only ~5 years of potential misinformation, not the extra 75 years we've since accumulated.
Nice work! So, why were you reading a 75 year old magazine article in the first place? Could we call this discovery 'serendipity'?
