Catchup #4 - Picking on MCG

ahhhhhhhhh, MCG "carried" you in the doubles, Stick. If you hadn't been such a burden, perhaps he wouldn't have been so tired in his finals match against Stacy Turner? That is the last time I let you guys use me, (and my partner), as a diving board to spring you into the second round of the doubles! If you are just going to tucker out at the finish line like that. Hell, I can do that myself, and I have an excuse because I am over 50.
I thought Neil's chocolate tasted like shit! He gave me some when I doubled him early leading 6-1 in Wisconsin. Wisconsin is not Belgium when it comes to chocolate, apparently.
There have been a lot of posts about cube play according to skill level lately. It seems there is a right of passage on that note. Aspiring players assign too much respect to established ones and even though they are studying like mad men to become great players themselves, they hamstring their chances by sending over-anxious cubes out.
Actually it is understandable and it is human nature to do so, but it gives the Neil Ks and Petkos of this world a much easier path to victory.
A good aspiring player will probably already be outplaying me with the checkers quite often, but he will sacrifice so much equity by handing me the mace that I can use on him later. Of course, the mace will have 4 heads on it when it comes back, and be "doubly" dangerous... So, why... in satan's name do clever young players continue to double great ones early?
It is a function of nerves, actually. Excited to play a Giant of backgammon perhaps, or a player that just wrote an article that they liked, or someone who has his own website... The naturally assume that they are an underdog. But they are excited to get to play against him anyway! Now they get an advantage ... say 5 pips in a 70 pip race. Itching to prove that they are getting good they talk themselves into doubling, BECAUSE their opponent is such a fantastic player!
BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
That fantastic player has a trivial take, and you KNOW that. He is fantastic because he will send over a precisely timed 4 cube to your ass when he has turned your slight advantage into his own solid one. Now, because he is soooooooo good, you realize you will have to be lucky to beat him and you take a very slight pass at 4... Soon, this avalanche has covered you in snow, and you walked right past the WARNING: Avalanche area sign.
If you want to beat Neil or Stick or Petko, do not accept any chocolate from them and PLAY YOUR GAME. See you all in LA, and bring your early cubes please!
