Cube Handling 2-away, 1-away Post-Crawford

Does anyone have a good reference article for the situation of trailing 2-away, 1-away post-crawford? Kit has a discussion in How to Play Tournament Backgammon and I've referenced that, but I'm trying to give an explanation to a friend from a recent match we played. Walter Trice also discusses it in Boot Camp if my memory is correct.
Match sequence was 52S,64R and I didn't cube since I correctly believed my opponent would drop. Roll 3 was 33 for me and I made 3 and 5 points. From that point on I had a lead for quite a while and held off since my opponent would use his free drop.
My opponent played mostly in the 80's until coming back to the game fairly recently, and was unfamiliar with the concept of holding the cube @ 1-away,2-away. Old school was to cube at the first opportunity.
